I was first introduced to April a few years back at The Liberty Road event in LA—and let me tell you, if you ever get the chance to attend one of these events, clear your schedule and go! It's one of those rare gatherings that does more than just fill your notebook; it fills your soul.
During a small group breakout session focused on branding and business, I was listening to April's insights. Her perspectives weren't just smart—they were magnetic. The kind of dialogue that makes you lean in, listen closer, and start reimagining what's possible in your own work. From that moment, something clicked.
April's not your typical corporate exec. She's jumped from selling luxury fashion at Diane von Furstenberg to building digital marketplaces and now leading THE BOARD, a a modern community consultancy agency. Her career isn't just impressive—it's a masterclass in staying true to yourself while breaking all the traditional career rules.
What makes April stand out? She brings razor-sharp humor, serious tenacity, and zero patience for corporate nonsense to everything she touches. She's living proof that success isn't about following a straight line, but about embracing your unique path with confidence and creativity.
Which is exactly why April was a natural choice for our next SEEN interview series.
Q&A with April Uchitel
1. What are you most proud of so far in your life and how does it make you feel?
I am the most proud of my two children Luella & Sebastian. At 19 & 16 respectively, I am starting to really see who they are becoming as humans and am beyond impressed with each of them in very different ways. I am learning so much about my own future self in watching them become theirs.
2. What has been a challenge you've faced in your life, and what did you learn from it?
I grew up with a lot of love but not a lot of money, and carried around a ton of insecurity for the majority of my life. I often felt like I did not belong in certain roles or circles, like I was an imposter, as I did not come from privileged, or highly networked environments. Eventually, I saw that what I brought to the table in terms of integrity and grit was far more valuable than an Ivy League education or an ability to name-drop.
3. What is an important and unexpected change you've made in your life?
I am still making it :). I am currently trying to re-program myself after decades of "grind culture" that having a corporate career - or frankly being a woman in business - teaches you. I am looking for more time for creative thinking. To truly look around and appreciate where I am and who I am surrounded with. To bring more gratitude into every day and slow the pace at which I have been running and the hours of multitasking to go further faster. I guess it comes with age - but also since the current climate is so hostile and toxic - the need to retreat, recenter, and focus inward has never been stronger.
4. When did you first feel truly "seen" and understood for who you are, rather than how others perceived you?
When I started THE BOARD and became more vulnerable in every aspect of building a business and a new way of doing things- on my own terms
5. In what ways do you feel more authentically yourself now than ever before?
I understand my superpowers more than I ever have. I've stopped comparing my skills to others which just made me feel small when I saw people "killing it" by working in ways that were unnatural to me. Once I started listening to my voice, my gut, my head, and my heart, it stopped stressing me out to watch how others go about things and allowed me to really push into my own path. My focusing on that and collaborating with other minded thinkers all looking ahead with the same level of curious and expansive thinking as I am - it opened up a whole new world.
6. Is your life what you thought it would be? Why or why not?
Not even close. Is SO much better!
7. What advice would you give to your younger self?
Lose the fear of scarcity .. it is a total lie and serves only to hold you back.
8. What wisdom have you gained that could only come through living these years?
As trite as it sounds every day is truly a gift. Until you experience loss, sickness, grief... you really don't understand how fragile and fleeting things can be and how it's really up to you to make the most of any and all the time we have.
9. What do you want your legacy to be?
We did an exercise in 2nd grade where we wrote out our epitaph - Mine was "Here lies April, she was nice." Funny but while that actually guided me more than I care to admit (golden rule) - I see it more as "She was kind, purposeful, generous, and real. She helped many people travel their paths while she was on hers."
10. If you had to identify yourself as one of the following what would it be and why?
With where I am now and where I want to go... Trailblazer 100%!
Find April at THE BOARD, and here on Instagram.
